Biotextiles: Weaving Miniature Architectures for Live Cells

Biotechnology borrows terminology from the language of architecture (scaffold, building blocks, etc), just as architecture borrows from textiles in its focus on structural composition. But the connections between life, architecture and the intersections of threads are more elaborate, practical and poetic. In this lecture, WhiteFeather will present her recent artistic tissue engineering work: hand-woven, miniature architectures for live mammalian cells. With this work, predefined structures, intentionally woven with gaps, spaces or empty areas, are offered to a population of microorganisms proliferating within a petri dish. The spaces within the structure are small enough to be utilized by the individual cells, while also large enough to present them with a creative challenge. Through their capacity for spatial detection and productive response, they build structural embellishment, an outer skin, by embodying the scaffold, vitalizing the architecture, inhabiting it and carrying out their life processes within and on it.

Líftækni fær að láni hugtök úr tungumáli arkitektúrs (þrep, byggingareiningar, o.s.frv), rétt eins og arkitektúr fær að láni hugtök frá textílheiminum með áherslu á uppbyggingu og samsetningu. En tengslin milli lífs, arkitektúrs og samsetninga þráða eru þó fjölbreyttari, hagnýtari og ljóðrænni. Í fyrirlestrinum mun WhiteFeather kynna nýjasta verk sitt tengt listrænni vefjaverkfræði: Handofinn og smágerðan arkitektúr fyrir frumur lifandi spendýra. Í verkinu er örverum sem fjölga sér á tilraunaskál fært sérhannað mannvirki með skipulögðum bilum, rýmum eða auðum svæðum. Rýmin innan mannvirkisins eru nógu lítil til þess að stakar frumur geti nýtt sér þau, en líka nógu stór til að veita þeim skapandi áskoranir. Með getu örveranna til staðbundinnar greiningar og virkrar svörunar, byggja þær skreytingar, ytri húð, innbyggð þrep, örva arkitektúrinn, búa í honum og framkvæma lífsferla sína innan í og utan á honum.
