CASTING A SPELL IN COMPUTATIONAL REGIMES: RITUAL PRACTICES FOR A TRANS-FEMINIST COUNTER-APOCALYPSE SomoS Arts, in collaboration with curator Arianna Forte, is thrilled to present Casting a Spell in Computational Regimes: Ritual Practices for a Trans-Feminist Counter-Apocalypse, a dynamic exhibition and event exploring the intersection of digital technologies, ritual practices, and trans-feminist resistance. Supported by the Italian Council, this thought-provoking project delves into contemporary rituals that counteract the crises and systemic inequalities of our time.
Drawing inspiration from the research of Italian anthropologist Ernesto De Martino, who explored the power of rituals as cultural tools for protection and redemption in times of existential crises, the exhibition positions itself at the intersection of art, activism, and magic. Today, amidst the pressures of digital capitalism, patriarchal structures, environmental collapse, and surveillance regimes, Casting a Spell in Computational Regimes aims to uncover how contemporary artistic practices can embody new ritualistic forms that challenge these forces. Arianna Forte’s curatorial framework focuses on the concept of a “trans-feminist counter-apocalypse,” a challenge to apocalyptic narratives by embracing precariousness as a shared condition of vulnerability that extends across all living beings. This notion is inspired by philosopher Johanna Zylinska’s rethinking of the Anthropocene, which calls for a feminist perspective on extinction and crisis, proposing alternative narratives of care and interconnectedness beyond gender, race, and human and non-human intelligence.
The exhibition runs from October 15 to 19, 2024, and is open to the public from 2 to 7 p-m. daily. Entry is free.
